A UNION OFFICER HEARS ABOUT SUPPRESSION OF THE
SLAVE INSURRECTION, JANUARY 10, 1864
10 January 1864 [Natchez]
Attended the Presbyterian Church again today. Called on Mrs. Henry in the evening and heard her version of the servile insurrection of 1861. The outrages committed on the poor, unfortunate Negroes who were suspected of evil design surpass any thing I ever heard or read of. The cruelty of the chivalrous gentry of Natchez would put to blush the warmest advocates of the Spanish Inquisition as practiced in the dark ages of poverty. Mrs. H. is a native of this town so the usual cry of “education prejudice” has no force whatever. We can never know half the evil.
